Business Is Business

I signed the contract to renew my companionship with the Lady Jenny last night. Like the first, it was a completely unilateral document. I am obligated nothing and due everything. She arrived to sign the document in the offices of Clark of Thentis dressed as I prescribed. Five veiled and robed in the colors of my caste, she wore scarlet slippers that were finely embroidered by artisan cobblers at the Fair of En'kara. Her handmaidens, trained by the 'indomitable' Gretchen, the first girl of the companion of Clark of Thentis himself, trailed her demurely. I might have sold the Lady Jenny off to the Merchant Samos, a visitor to the House of Clark, from Port Kar. She may have been given as a gift to Prius of Ianda, who owns the beautiful Selke. I may have, too, simply kept her and companioned another, timid Lady Constance, daughter of Gerald of the House of Gerald in Thentis. I chose to renew. I do not need the prestige or status that would come with an alignment to such a lofty house. My ego does not require sons. I suppose it might have come as a surprise when things unfolded the way they did. There are times a change becomes necessary. There are times the status quo should be adhered to. I made my decision.
